In our increasingly “insta” world in which we are continually bombarded with information, make split second decisions about the content we are exposed to, can “cancel” people with one click, and seek out “likes” for the posed and filtered photos that we post, we risk losing the art and skill of cultivating genuine relationships with those in our professional and personal networks. Such relationships require forming mutually beneficial connections with people who are aligned with our purpose and our personal story. To forge such connections you must — before requesting help or favors from a new professional acquaintance — take the time to discover who that person is, to assess whether their values are aligned with yours, and to identify how you might be of service to them. Doing that will allow you to develop longer-term relationships that are based on respect and mutuality rather than on quick transactions. It will also create the kind of good will that leads to opportunities you might otherwise have missed out on.
